About LemurType

LemurType LLC is Dr. David M. MacMillan when I choose to wear the hat of the professional typefounder. It is a one-person, part-time operation. My goal is to produce again some of the type and equipment of the now antiquarian field of letterpress printing for those who carry this fine art forward into the future.

I apprenticed in typecasting with Schuyler ("Sky") Shipley of Skyline Type Foundry. At present I cast on a Thompson Type-Caster manufactured by the Lanston Monotype Machine Company.

LemurType is a commercial undertaking, but I also believe very strongly in the freedom of information and in the preservation of information about antiquarian technology. When involved with the preservation and sharing of information, I put aside my commercial typefounder's hat and put on my hobbyist's hat. On my hobby website, www.CircuitousRoot.com, I try to document and make freely available as much as I can of the technological history of letterpress printing and machinery.

As a personal note, the "Dr." before my name indicates a Ph.D. in English and American Literature (UC San Diego, 1992). I'm a "doctor of words," not a physician.

My wife, Rollande Krandall, is a jewelry maker specializing in flameworked glass beads and in assembled jewelry for Anime and Steampunk subcultures. Her business is Singing Lemur Jewelry, which has its home online at www.Lemur.com. While Singing Lemur Jewelry is a separate business, we are both very fond of lemurs. The name "LemurType" seemed appropriate both because of this and as an homage to the many "-type" names which defined much of the history of machine typecasting (Linotype, Intertype, Monotype, Baltotype, etc.)

In the interests of good scholarship, here is a page about the various decorative images used on this website.
